Last night the server was not backed up, when I came to look at the tape today the message reported "Tape device reported an error on a request to get device status. Error reported:unrecognizable data."

I put the tape in another server and it recognised it, I also used an other server to erase the tape. When placing the erased tape in the original server the same error came up again. Using another tape I put that in the original server and it recgnised it. I cannot possibly understand the problem. Is there any way of getting around this without rebooting the server????

If that makes any sense to anyone I would be grateful for ideas.

I have had this happen with floppies where the drives on two different machines were slightly out of alignment. Could it be that the tape drive is slowly dying?
Just to play safe I would do a test restore and make sure that your data is OK.
Could it also be that the tape you were using is worn?
Repeat the process with a brand new tape and see if you get the same results.
