NT API errors when Norton Utilities installed.

When Symantec's Norton Utilities is intsalled on the Exchange Server it causes NT api errors which stop the Echange Database Defrag from running and also fills up the application event log. Is there a way of avoiding this other than uninstalling Norton Utilities?

What exactly are the errors? What version of Exchange? NT Service pack levels? Norton version? and a list of other apps running on this server? Thanks...

Versions; MS NT4.0 build 1381 SP3, MS Exchange 5.5, Norton 2.0. <br>
Other apps; MS Proxy Server, MS Visual C++ PRo5.0<br>
Error; "MSExchangeIS ((261)) unexpected NT API error 0xC00000D".<br>
Please note that the error only occurs when Norton is installed and clears when it is uninstalled.<br>

Ok, I have found information here. This Microsoft article specifically names Norton NT Tools 1.0 (if this is not the version let me know). It also says there is no fix for it, however, I would apply the Hotfix to the server just to be on the safe side. The article specifies thats it's for Innoculan but has specifics regard Norton at the end. Here is the article:<br>

When you use Innoculan anti-virus software on a Windows NT Server version 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) computer running Microsoft Exchange Server, the Exchange Directory (DS) service will not start. In the Windows NT Event Viewer Application log, you will see the following error: <br>

Unexpected NT API error: 0xC000000D<br>
MSExchange DS ((153) ) - 1022<br>
Error -1022 has occurred (internal ID 2030149). Contact Microsoft<br>
Technical Support for assistance.<br>
The Microsoft Exchange Server database (EDB) could not be initialized<br>
and returned error -1022. Unrecoverable error, the directory can't<br>
continue.<br>

This is because Innoculan installs a file system filter that disables the JET engine ESE97, from addressing database files. <br>

WORKAROUND<br>
One of the two following workarounds may be used if Innoculan is installed on the Exchange Server. <br>

<br>
Uninstall Innoculan and restart the computer. Disabling the Innoculan service is not sufficient. <br>
2. Install a Windows NT hotfix that been released to customers as part of <br>
the roll-up hotfixes that are recommended in the readme.doc file for<br>
Microsoft Exchange Server, version 5.5. These hotfixes are available at:<br>

Note: If you later re-install Windows NT Service Packs, you must also<br>

MORE INFORMATION<br>
This same error has occured with Norton NT Tools version 1.0 installed. Disabling the Norton service does not work, it must be removed. <br>
<br>
Omtool Fax Senior 2.5 will produce this error with an internal ID of 2030148. The hotfix noted above also corrects this problem. <br>

A Microsoft technician recommended me to remove Norton from my Exchange Servers. If viruses are imbedded in E-mail, it wouldn't catch them anyway. As long as you have virus protection on the workstations, that should catch viruses coming in through e-mail.<br>

Warcorp, sorry for not replying. I had forgotten about this problem. I never tried your resolution but thanks for the advice and I am keeping it for future reference.<br>

Dan, the exchange server also runs several databases and other packages and is also the proxy server. We are resolving this issue by getting more kit to split the services. Thnaks for the input, all is welcome.
