On boot up of one of our NT 4 SP6 Workstations, we get the blue screen of death with the following message:

STOP: c0000135 {Unable to Locate DLL}
The dynamic link library winsrv could not be found in the specified path Default Load Path.
Beginning dump of physical memory.
Physical memory dump complete, contact your system administrator or technical support group.

I have tried to reboot several times and get the same message. It is a Gateway GP350, Windows NT 4.0 service pack 6, and 356 MB of memory.

We tried booting from a Emer Repair Disk and it brings us to the same place.
We removed the hard drive and installed it as a slave in another machine. Ran a virus scan (nothing found) and Adaware (removed some spyware). Didn't help.
Then I copied and pasted the winsrv.dll file from another workstation of same make into the winnt/system32 folder (File size and date were identical to the one on the problem machine). Still no help.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks, I tried to follow those instructions and got to the part where I was suppose to install a parallel install of NT. It will not let me. It says there is a problem with the hard drive and suggests refromating. I think it has something to do with the fact that it was originally FAT but was previously converted to NTFS (about 3 years ago). I'm stuck at that point.

Did you create an Emergence Repair Disk for this system? If you did follow the article where it says this:

1. Start the system with the Windows NT Setup disks.
2. At the first screen, press R for repair.
3. Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to Inspect boot sector, and then press the ENTER key to uncheck this selection. Then perform the same procedure to uncheck Verify Windows NT system files and Inspect startup environment. After this, only Inspect Registry Files should have a check mark. Next, move the cursor to Continue (Perform Selected Tasks), and then press ENTER.
4. Let Windows NT perform the mass storage detection. When prompted, select S to specify additional drivers if your computer requires OEM drivers.
5. When prompted to do so, insert the emergency repair disk that was originally created for this computer, or press ESC to let Windows NT search for repair information for version 3.51 or version 4.0.
6. Setup will then ask which registry files should be replaced. Using the arrow keys, move the cursor to Software (Software Information) and press ENTER. Next, move the cursor to Continue (Perform Selected Tasks) and press ENTER.
7. When finished, restart your computer when Setup prompts you to do so.

Hope that helps. It may be to the point where you have no choice but to wipe the system clean.

John, the error message is somewhat misleading. I have run into the same error message on one of our servers. The only way to see if you can recover is to install a parallel copy of NT and try to load the software registry hive for that particular installation. If you are unable to load the hive, it is corrupted and you will need to re-install. Refer to the following link
