Gentlemen;

Quick question from the uneducated admin...

We are trying to replace a Windows Server with Active Directory and Group Policy with a Linux Solution. Out research shows we should be using Novell Nsure Identity Manager and ZENworks DT 4 with patch manager.

Do the "SERVER" portions of these products work on a Linux Server? They will be acting as a central authentication server and also attempting to manage/control 50+ Win XP Pro desktops.

If NOT - Does anyone know if they will run on WINE or VMWare running on Linux?

Thanks

Yes, Nsure Identity Manager (aka DirXML 2.0) will operate on a Linux server running eDirectory. Be ready to get your hand dirty, doing it on Linux is not as simple as Netware or Winblows. Since you have to get iManager to operate to manage any NIM data (you CAN NOT use ConsoleOne, you will just get errors if you try), you must first ensure your eDirectory is functioning and the apache web server and tomcat servlet are configured properly. You could also run into querky LDAP issues (personnaly I have not been able to get iManager running with out dorking around with LDAP issues first).

HOWEVER, ZFD 4 & 6.5 (the current version) do not have Linux modules for the managment agents.

Not sure if the ZFD modules for Windows will run under WINE (who the hell would want to do that?) You can run a NetWare or Windows server in a VMWare session to run the ZFD service modules. NetWare runs like crap in VMWare Desktop 3.1 and below, better functionality in ver 4.0 and above. But in your case you will want to use VMWare GSX, and NetWare runs like a champ under that (used it on Suse Linux for a test bed enviroment, one client has a one in production doing GroupWise in prep for a migration to moving to GroupWise linux agents in the future ... all runs great for them).

To add to Provogeek...

Zen6.5 includes the new Linux Management stuff..which I think is basically "Red Carpet" (Ximian?). The Patch Management piece of Zen6.5 currently runs on Windows only but I've heard they're working on getting it over to Linux as well.

I have no experience with the Zen6.5 Linux stuff. You can download the eval and try it for 90 days though.

Thanks all. I've downloaded tons of Novell stuff relative to Zenworks and Nterprise Linux Services and will be giving it a go.
