Dear Experts,

I have problem with my DNS server which is installed on Windows 2003 server.

when i do nslookup, it gives me following result:
C:\>nslookup
*** Can't find server name for address 10.0.0.5: Non-existent domain
*** Default servers are not available
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 10.0.0.5

> mydomain.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: 10.0.0.5

Name: mydomain.com
Addresses: 10.0.0.7, 10.0.0.200, 10.0.0.5

10.0.0.5 is the main server where DNS actually installed and 10.0.0.7 and 10.0.0.200 are the member servers.

I have two questions..

1- Why "Default Server" is unknown
2- Why i see 3 IP addresses. i.e. 10.0.0.7, 10.0.0.200, 10.0.0.5. I only wnat to see only 10.0.0.5 IP
address.

Thanks
Saif

It's showing unknown because your reverse dns for the 10.0.0.0 subnet isn't setup or isn't setup correctly.

The only reason 200 and 7 should have showed up would be if those servers were setup as domain controllers.

When you query for the domain name in the internal dns servers you'll get all the domain controllers for the domain.

Dear mrdenny,

how can I setup reverse dns and how should i install Backup servers those IPs are 10.0.0.7 and 10.0.0.200

Saif

You would setup the reverse DNS zone in the DNS admin tool. In the reverse DNS zones section.

To install those servers as domain controllers (which they should already be if they are comming up when you do an nslookup for the domain) you run dcpromo from the servers console. You can also use dcpromo to stop them from being domain controllers.
