I am trying to install xp pro on a second system for home and I when the files start to copy I can't get the npfs.sys file to copy or install. Out of fustration I finally said to skip it. All other files went on with no problem. But then when Windows starts to install I get a message.
lsass.exe system error:
the endpoint format is invalid.

I have tried formatting bot NTFS and Fat32 with the same results.
System is AMD Athlon 900 Mhz 256 Mg Ram 15gb hard drive.

Any ideas?

Is the CD media ok? (eg, can you copy the file \i386\ntfs.sy_ from the CD on another machine). Have you another XP install CD you could try?

If it is, you may have a hardware problem of some sort (often manifests itself with problems copying files during setup). You could try booting from win98 boot floppy with CD rom support, create a fat32 partition and copy the folder \1386 from the XP install CD to the hard drive. Then start the install from this hard drive copy - run winnt.exe from C:\i386.

I was able to access all files on the cd and I was able to copy the npfs file. So I burned a cd from the original and tried it with the same results.
I then fdisked the drive and created a 4mb fat32 partition formated the fat32 partition created c:\i386 folder and copied all the files from I386 on the original cd. When I tried to run winnt I was told I should run smartdrive. I don't have smartdrive and couldn't find it anywhere so I told the install to go ahead without it. I believe all the files copied but I'm not sure since I went away and when I came back the system was locked up. I ran winnt again and was told something about not having key numbers.
Next, suspecting possible hardware problems I replaced the cd, the hard drive, the memory, and removed an onboard lan and disabled it in the bios, removed ls-120 drive and replaced it with 1.4 floppy and set that up in the bios.
I fdisked the drive to have no partition. started xp installation from the cd and BOOM same problem (can't copy ntfs.sys)
I'm now attempting to install win 98se just for the hell of it. The only hardware left is the motherboard, processor and power supply. If 98 installs are there anymore ideas to get xp on this system?
