I have a Linux RedHat 7.3 system that has been running my apps for quite some time. We now need the ability to print from the apps via a cron job that runs twice a month.

I have a HP Color LaserJet 4500n that has TCP/IP built in. I have Webmin, I have Samba, and I think CUPS installed.
I've scowered the web for a simple set of instructions to get this to print, but no luck.

I've attempted the HPLIP, but it errors. I have now idea why. I have root access.

Can someone walk me through step by step on how to install this. VARIABLES will not work, I'm a dummy when it comes to LINUX.

Are your apps windows based? I ask because you mention Samba. Also, if your apps are GUI based on any platform, you may have problems scripting a print job.

my apps are web sites, that run off perl and MySql. I don't need help (yet) with the apps, I just need to get the printer setup, then i'll deal with sending the data from the apps to the printer.

Use the GUI tools that come with RH. I haven't used the 7.x tools in a long time, but the ones with Fedora are quite nice. If that fails, then I recommend the CUPS web UI.

If you have cupsd running, pointing your web browser at will give you a web-based printer administration interface, which is relatively straightforward.

I got it setup just by running 'setup' from the console. the previous printer i had in there, never worked, so i never tried the new printer. but it works now.. sorta.

I need to print HTML from the console. When i print it, it shows all the <table> stuff. but i need it to format properly.. any ideas how to do that?

one person said to convert it to PDF, how do I do that?

If you are using CUPS, go to with your Internet browser.
Login with root and use the interface to add/manage your printers.
