I am considering upgrading my server which is a P2 233 with 2GB (sys) & 9 GB hard disks running Netware 4.2 with about 30 users. New server to be a P3 800Mhz dual processor and 36GB hard disk
I do not have a tape backup and data backup is usually to workstations and laptops.
Can I copy setup information - config of users, priviledges, login scripts etc to a workstatio for reinstallation on the new server. The old server is to be retired.

You will have to make some sort of backup that is SMS compliant (e.g. arcserve, Backup Exec, or SBackup). This means that the backup must use Novell's TSA's to copy data and trustees from the server. Copying the data will not transfer the trustees - ownership and file rights. Also NDS will have to be backed up & restored to the new server. It is not impossible without a tape drive but much harder. You could also look into an image program like Norton Ghost for NetWare.

Good Luck,

Mark ;-)

You can install the new server with a fresh copy of Novell. Once that is done working and tested, you can probably connect the old drive to the machine and restore all your original settings.
