Hello,
I want to use a 386/486 as a novell server i know the Hardware is supporded.
I will use a novell 3.11 or 3.12.
can i use the tcp/ip protokoll for connecting with a laptop on my server.
Or can i use a ftp server(upload/download?)?
It will not woark in the i want to make a mailserver to.
Can I do this?
Wath will I need?
thx sebi0001

Netware 3.12 will support TCP/IP, but it does so by "tunneling" IP packets within IPX packets. In short, it will allow communications, but that's about it.

If you want to connect your laptop to the server, you can do so, but you will have to load IPX/SPX or something Microsoft calls NW IPX/SPX compatible protocol. And you'll need a client for Netware, either the MS client or the Novell client.

Your best bet would be to use Netware 5 or higher, which can use TCP/IP as a default protocol, or use IPX on your laptop.

I have fond an ftp server program for netware 3.12 do this not work?
That will be more easy than ipx becors than my network is ready and i do´n`t want to install the ipx on 4 systems :)

I'm not familiar with any ftp programs for 3.12, so I wouldn't know if that works or not. But for any communication to occur using Netware 3.12, you will have to load IPX.

The FTP server will work okay. It won't support long file names (at least the ones I have used don't).

This isn't gunne be the seamless thing you might be after. To transfer files you will have to use an FTP client to upload/download files. There won't be any drive mappings.

As iolair points out, the NCP protocol is not supported on the TCP transport in NetWare 3.x, NCP is only supported on the IPX transport.

You have to install and FTP client to use FTP, and/or, you have to setup the WebFolder stuff to attach to an FTP server. Not even sure if WebFolder will even work with NW3.x You visiting the workstation no matter what.

Since you are going through the trouble of setting up a 3.x server, there really should not be any trouble installing the IPX transport onto 4 workstations. M$ includes a native client that is bindery aware, so you will not have to install the Novell client (really only needed for PureIP Networks and proper NDS communication, none of which NetWare 3.x has). If you go this route, you will be able to utilize login scripts and make drive mappings on the workstations. In turn, make things easier on your end users and make your life much easier.
