Hey

Samba has a read list, guest list and write list.

I want to give to a group the following permissions:
-Can read files
-Can modify/delete/add files
-Can browse directories
-CANNOT CREATE NEW DIRECTORIES

Can I do that?

Adding new files (creating files) and Creating Directories is the same thing and require the same permissions. I dont think you can do what you want? i might be wrong, but permissions can only be made in combinations of read/write/execute
Nick.

Yep... I think samba does'nt "imitate" the NTFS files system regarding permissions.

It does restrick write, read access for a share.

Well, samba is a very good product and Im waiting samba 3.0 :)

you can achieve the file permissions that you want ... but it requires some modification of a few important things.
You have two options:
1. download the EA and ACL extentions for the ext2/3 filesystem and kernel and patch and rebuild. See or,
2. convert your file system to XFS available from HP. Sorry don't know the exact link.

You then need Samaba 2.2.3a (I think) or above, which have nt acl support enabled by default and you can then modify the permission as per NT security.

Not a "simple" thing to do, but worth the effort.
See the Samba-HOWTO-Collection for some more info, or as always google search.
