Novell Client & XP Pro

We have problem with performance on Windows XP machines with the Novell client installed. The Network is Windows 2000 Server and Windows XP client. The Novell client is installed on all XP machines so they can see a database that lives on the old Novell servers.
When browsing network directories the response is terribly slow, sometimes 2 minutes to create a network view. Opening document by going file, open also takes a considerable length of time to generate a directory view. Removing the Novell client solves the problem.
The Novell site doesn't have any referance to this problem or anything similar. Has anyone experienced it?

Under Network Connection, Advanced, change the binding priority to place lanman first.
