I have a Novell 3.12 server, The utilization gets up to 78% and the server locks up. We have to restart the server, and bring it backup. We have 512 memory, about 25 users. Any help would be appreciated.

HI!

* A good idea is to apply all the latest patches from Novell.
I know that there are service packs for Netware 4 & 5, I haven't looked for ver 3.x, but for sure there is the 3.2 upgrade which you can buy,
and for sure there are individual patches for 3.x .

At the bare minimum, you should apply the CLIB patch.

* try to isolate the reason.
Try to disable the backup program, the BTREIVE, and other server services.
Rem them out from AUTOEXEC.NCF or just unload them while the server is running.
You might need to upgrade or apply patches to your backup or other program.

In MONITOR, you should also look at the CACHE BUFFERS values.
The current total (I don't remember the exact name) should be more then a half 1/2 of the ORIGINAL CACHE BUFFERS.
If it goes down it means that some program on the server is taking the memory and it is another value to check among with CPU UTILIZATION.

* Check the console log and the logs of your 3rd party server applications for errors and warnings about outdated NLMs.

* If there is an antivirus software running on the server itself, try to unload it.

* Post here the STARTUP.NCF and SERVER.NCF files and you might get better replies.
Also parts of the log files VOL%LOG.ERR SYS$LOG.ERR might be helpfull
(log in as admin and search SYS for all *.ERR files)
