We are moving from a network using Novell 4.11 to one using Novell 5.1 because of space. In the process Zenworks was replaced with Fortress and Cleanslate for security. We have replaced previous problems with new problems. The individual user stations seem secure, but the labs...especially the high end user labs are experiencing problems saving, losing saved files and freezing up. We would think it might be related to older machines, some 200's running on Windows 95, but an experiment running Samba with a Linux server seems to work fine. And we still have the problems on our newer machines as well. Any advice on where to focus our efforts would be greatly appreciated as it is becoming very frustrating for our teachers and student users. Thanks!

Yuck. Sounds like you've got your hands full. A lot of schools are in the same situation. Why don't you break the problems down a little more for us? Start by picking 1 thing that you think we'd be able to help with.

I have one idea. Try disabling "write behind" caching on the A: drives. Sometimes students will pop the floppy in and out too quickly, but also, Win95 is horrible about caching A: files. You can save a document, exit word, and 2 minutes later the disk light will come on to finish saving.

Try to get the students and teachers involved too. Perhaps you want to make a "Lost File Incident Form" and have the users fill it out when they lose a file. Offer to disable Fortress and Cleanslate on a handfull of computers as a troubleshooting technique. Ask the teachers to agree only to put responsible students at those PC's so that you can collect solid data on the problems. e.g. you don't have to worry as much that the problems were caused by naughty or ignorant students. (I don't mean ignorant as an insult, I mean it litterally, like a student ignorant of what a folder is)
