All my in-house Novell is 100 user so I need some input.
Is a 15 user license a rock solid 15 users? A client of mine just bought 15 user licenses, but 'forgot' to tell me about 3 other PCs that need to go on the network.

Before I install and ask for more money, I'd like to know if I need the extra license pack.

Thanks,
Glenn Abelson

Glenn -

It's my understatnd that it only applies to simultaneous users - including network printers - logged in at any given time.

That is correct...but I also remember on ELS II and Netware 3 and 4 sometimes having as many as 14 users logged on to a 10 user license, simultaneously.

I think that is to protect against shutdown of a PC without a log off. It can take Novell or NT awhile to realize there is no user there.

True.

Since I don't even know what ELS II is, I'm gonna assume your already beyond my scope of assistance :)

You are remembering not to count the connections that begin with an * (those don't count as connections. . . those are friendly stars that only help us better serve our networking environment (hahaha) sorry I can't help further.

ELS II was Novell Netware 2.0 small business server.
Yikes..I just aged myself.

Licenses are fully additative, (You could have a 100 user and 25 user license on the same machine to yield 125 licenses)
These are for simultanious connections.
You can go "over the limit" in some circumstances:
- A connection is taken in order to login, once logged in, it is released. (for a time 2 are used)
- connections by printers and servers are not counted.

Dan is on the right track here.

-only when Zenworks 2 or higher is installed does a login take up 2 connections. (1 for the user and 1 for the workstation) As soon as the workstation finishes its' business, it releases the connection leaving only the 1 login from the user active.

-when NetWare 4 was introduced, we had the same problems as NetWare 3 where Legacy printers would use up active licenses also. Somewhere between 4.01 and 4.11, Novell added 3 "grace licenses" which were to help offset the printer issue, and to be used for anything else you can come up with.

- Now with NetWare 5.X, if you use Legacy Printing, the active license is still taken up per printserver, but if you use NDPS, no active connections are utilized.

-also, as Dave stated, NetWare licensing is additive. Buy your Server + 5 and add a 10 and a 5 user additive pack.

Hope this helps.

-Mike
