hi everyone,

i've just set up a new installation of windows server 2003 enterprise on my server. I have configured all the network settings correctly to go along with the ones of my computers. But ive met an error, no data can be sent or recieved by the server, meaning that the server cant access the internet, and i cant activate windows, also its not showing up as an attatched device on my router, and is not showing up in the workgroup's network neighbourhood.

any help would be appreciated,
regards,
josh hold

Make sure your server is getting DNS from the router. Also bring up the cmd box and try to ping yahoo.com and then pinging 66.94.234.13, this is yahoos ip address. If you can ping the ip and not the name then it is most likely DNS.

i get my dns from my ips's public dns servers, my ip is a public static one and is in the same subnet as my pcs, my pcs are all running fine, and i cant ping anything....
any ideas? this is really bugging me now

if this will help anyone:

Router: Netgear DG438pn
DNS Servers: 212.104.130.9 & 212.104.130.65
Server OS: Windows 2003 Server Enterprise

Beyond network settings have you checked your cabling, speed/duplex settings between your server and your switch? Hope this helps.

everything was working fine until i reinstalled windows, i havent touched the cabling or the switch

and the cabling and ips work fine on my other computers!... so i have no idea what the problem is !?!

Even though you re-installed Windows it doesn't mean the network components are not at fault. It may be just a coincidence that one or more network components had failed during your re-install(have seen this many times). Did you do the following;

1. Check the link light on your switch port where the server is connected to see that it is active.
2. Check the speed/duplex settings of your network card on the server and compare to the switch port (they should either be both set to auto or to 100MBps full-duplex (preferable)
3. Check your cable
4. Ensure that the driver for your network card is up to date and same as the one you had prior to the re-install
5. Verify that TCP/IP is functioning properly on your server by pinging your localhost addresses ie 127.0.0.1 and the IP address assigned to the server.

Hope this helps

it was something with windows, its only being used as a web server anyway so ive installed windows xp pro on it and all works fine!
