Worked fine when I shut it down. Turned on and nothing, not even the DOS setup, just blank, no signal. Monitor is new and works great. Cables are all fine. Video card, BFG nVidia 6800 GS OC, works fine. Tried another vid card and it did not work either (no signal). Only thing left is my MB,an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe. There is no onboard vid out. Is there any other way to verify that it is my motherboard? How can a MB be fine one minute and dead the next? Needless to say, I'm bummed. Could use any advice no matter how dire. If necessary, what would be a good replacement board without spending $300.00? Don't use onboard sound or vid. For the most part it is used for gaming, music and web surfing.

1. How do you figure that the Monitor works FINE? was it tested on another machine?

2. have you tried another Monitor on your PC? to check if it is a monitor problem or PC problem...

3. have you changed cables? just to see if the cable is at fault...

4. does the PC boot up at all? does it beep when you power it on? do the drives get accessed? if NOT, then unplug the power from the PSU, then hold the POWER button for a minute or more, reapply the power cable and then try to boot your PC up (some PSU will go into a safety mode, when they detect a problem in order to safekeep the mainboard)...

I think we may have to hold off until after you have tried another monitor. Perhaps a friendly repair shop will lend you one to test with if you don't still have your old Monitor around the place?

Have 5 working monitors and 3 other computers, connected to 3 monitors, had same outcome, nothing. Installed a different video card, the same. MB powers up and its light comes on. Hard drive spins and warms. Seems to me that it must be the MB. Is there any way to find out for sure? I found it a bit hard to investigate since there was nothing on monitor. Seems like a brick wall to me. Would love any other angles on solving my delemma.
This concerns an XP Pro on ASUS 7N8X-E Deluxe and BFG nVidia 6800 GS OC.

Ok, now we have a bit more info to work on...

I suggest that you try the following first:

unplug the PC from the wall outlet (or the powercord from the back of the PC), then hold the power button down for a minute or more... replug the powercord and try to boot...

reason: there are PSU that will go into a powersafe mode, when they detect that something is amiss, in order to protect the mainboard...

if that does not help, then I would try to use another good known working PSU... a single rail could have burned out which is needed by the mainboard (e.g. +3.3v) but would allow the powering of the HDD, Floppy, Fans, etc. as they run on either +5v and +12v...

check the seating of the HS-Fan and see if it is plugged into the correct header (should be marked as CPU-Fan or similar)...

check the seating of the GFX-card, other PCI cards, and RAM, as slight variations here could lead to a no BOOT up situation as being described...

also make sure that when you power up the PC that NO usb devices are attached, I've seen some that would behave the same as described until I moved the USB devices onto a USB HUB (Powered)...

Clear CMOS, sometimes does wonders, as the NVRAM can get scrambled (though these are rare occurances), and when posting will use wrong settings for the hardware... taking out the battery for a few minutes will do...

report back...

and you have not answered my question if the mainboard beeps at all when you power it on...

Can you power up your faulty machine, imagine (in your head) it is working correctly, and when it gets to the unseen and hopefully present login screen, can you login remotely to it from another machine?

Have a look around this site.

Motherboards are susceptible to failure just like anything else, including forum posters like me!

Hello Linney. My XP machine is closed to remote access.I never go anywhere so never saw the need for remote access. (lol)

Hey BBB, I want to thank you for all the ideas. I will start on them right away and then get back to you.

There is no sound at all from the MB when turned on. The Vid card squeals when power is left unplugged from card. Plug in its power and no noise.

(Later) Hello, I tried everything you suggested and even put in a new battery. Tested all power lines and fans. Absolutely nothing getting to monitor.

is the PC booting but with no display ?
can you ping it after a few mins of turning it on (firewall permitting of course)

also if your able to get hold of a pci graphics card incase its the video card slot thats dead , i would def make sure that the system is booting and that its just the video thats broken and not dead memory thats preventing the PC from posting.

It's hard to tell if it is booting since I have no screen. What is the process to ping my own computer? Vid card works fine on other computers.
Starting to look for MB replacement.

Vid card works fine on other computers.
Now that is the final piece of the puzzle...

There are two things left at this stage that could be the problem...

Mainboard or CPU...

just for kicks, take out the RAM modules and then power the PC up, if it beeps then it was RAM...

if the card is working in another machine, i would imagine your not getting even as far as post , just a thought and a simple one at that , check your reset and / power buttons are not sticking, if the reset button is jammed in then it will give the same symptoms as you have.

Ping.

open a Command Prompt window on a working machine on your Network, and then enter the PING command, and after a space follow it by the IP address (or the computer name) of the machine that you are having trouble with.

pulled all RAM and got no beep. Tried to ping but RUN window would just disappear upon hitting enter key. All buttons are working properly.
Time to upgrade. Have a very nice Vista machine(SLI). I like the ASUS A7N8-E Deluxe and have Athelon64 3200+.
Memory is Corsair TwinX1024-3200C2PT and plan on using it. Woould like both IDE and SATA. Anyone have any suggestions on a mid range MB to suit my parts and needs? Want XP board for gaming, surfing and emails. Don't need onboard sound. Socket A(462). BFG nVidia 6800 GS OC(AGP).
