'nother sendmail question

Stuck here - I want all my mail to go to a relay host. I set the "DS" macro to smtp.domain.com. Yet, when I send mail, the first thing that happens is sendmail tries to open a connection to iris1.directnic.com to look up MX records. In my mind, as soon as I hit "send" then sendmail should open a connection to my relay host and nothing else. am I mistaken about this?
