hi all

so why can't you use the version 6 client on a domino 4.6 server?

cheers

neil

You can, actually. The R6 client will "understand" the R4 server and you will be able to work with your mail and in the various applications that you may use. But you will be working with R4 design.

What you cannot do is develop with an R6 designer on an R4 platform. Or an R5 platform, for that matter.

Why that ? Well, first the ODS has changed from R4 to R5, which means that the physical structure of a Notes database changes after R4x. So, designing a Notes db with an R6 client on an R4 server will end in a major conflict, possibly even a crash of your client. The server will not understand the design in any case, and your app will not be accessible.
Second, as in all products, R6 has evolved immensely. There are many new commands that R4 cannot possibly comprehend, and many more commands that are no longer treated the same way.

In short, R6 is intelligent enough to work with R4, but the reverse is simply not possible.

when i install a 6 client and try to connect to a 4.6 server it gives me an error message - can't remember what error it gives now !

the error message i get is "domino directory does not contain a required view"

my server version is 4.6.2a

Hello,
I would upgrade to at least 5.0.12. R4 has so many bugs...
Just an opinion. Good luck.

Rgds,

John Judge

I'm trying to track down that error message, but I cannot find an instance for it.

I'll get back to you as soon as I do find something.

i've actually sorted it now

1. Set up the 6.x client with no connection to the Lotus Domino 4.x server
using the ID to connect to the server
2. Create appropriate connection documents to the 4.6 server and location
documents as required
3. Connect to the Lotus Domino 4.x server and it should go through
successfully. This problem only occurs with the first server you connect
to.

Congratulations !

One more pebble on your beach of experience :)
