I am using 40/70 (compression) DLT tapes but noticed that the tapes are not even using native capacity. I imagine that compression is done through the hardware, how is it possible to check that the compression feature is activated through the hardware?.

Depending on the make and model of you drive, there are jumpers on the older DLT drives. With the newer drives, this is on by default.
