Hello, I'm trying to connect a Hayes external modem to a Win 98se 100mhz via the LPT1 port. I know this is stone age, but it has to be cheap for the workplace and we had the modem on hand and this Compaq 5100 has none. Any thoughts or ideas would great. Thanks

Jeff

The modem may appear to take a parallel cable which connects to the LPT1 port, but actually it takes a 25 pin serial cable.
You may not have a 25 pin serial (COM) port on your computer. If not, you can get a serial cable with a 9 pin male connector on one end and a 25 pin female connector on the other end and that will work.
Serial cables are very often refered to as modem cables. Get one with the correct connectors and don't rely on gender changers or adapters to make the connections.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

John
