I hate the fact that my drive C and drive D are shared automatically (C$ and D$) after boot. And even if I un-share them, they will be shared on the next boot. Can I tweak my Windows 2000 so that they are not shared by default? Thanks for any help.

Use your registry editor and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services \LanmanServer\Parameters
Add a new double word value: AutoShareWks
and set it to 0.

Now manually delete the shares. They will not reappear on reboot.

This still leaves the admin$ share open I believe.

IPC$, but otherwise you lose RPC.
I do not think you can completely remove IPC$.

Thanks, guys. But, ah...Window registry is something a bit touchy for me, could you tell me exactly what to do when you said: "Add a new double word value: AutoShareWks and set it to 0.". Thanks again.

Open a notepad session and copy/paste the below into a file to be saved as no_shares.reg

**** begin copy/paste below this line
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services \LanmanServer\Parameters]
"AutoShareWks"=dword:00000000

*** end copy/paste above this line

Double click no_shares.reg and merge with your registry. Reboot. Clear your admministrative shares.

Thanks, bcastner. You're super! I'll try it out immediately
