not registered error in office

While opening a Word document, an error message "This document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document <name of the document>" appears. I am not able to cut/paste or copy/paste in Windows Explorer or in MSOffice programs (MSWord, Excel) anymore.
What is wrong? Thanks for your help!

I reinstalled office and the same thing happened. I reinstalled from a setup file of Office located on my server.

I notice that the knowledge based article for the not registered problem gives a workaround. Will the steps given there fix the problem.

If not how can I fix the problem permanently. I have several machines on my network with this problem.

Any other suggestions from any one?

I don't know if the steps will fix the problem. Have you tried them? I have no desire to create the problem for myself.

My favourite part of the kb article - given that it refers to both Word 2000 & 2002

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
