A friend of mine sends me email through her hotmail account and i recieve the email, I send an email to her through my hotmail or outlook account and she doesn't recieve the email, she does however recieve email if i send by reply. Anyone know why this is?

Unfortunetly not, wish it was that though!

We had this issue back in the beginning of 2004. It was caused by Hotmail's spam filter blacklisting a block of IP addresses from our ISP (Shaw Cablesystems in Canada).

Here is Hotmail's reply at that time:

"Thank you for contacting MSN Hotmail. With the help of the detailed troubleshooting information you have provided, we have determined that the message in question has been blocked by an MSN Hotmail filter deployed to stop unsolicited e-mail. Like many other e-mail service providers, MSN Hotmail uses filtering methods to stop unsolicited e-mail. We understand that it is important to you that you be able to send e-mail to users of the Hotmail service. At this time, however, we do not have the ability to verify that e-mail sent by any particular sender is no unsolicited, so we cannot offer a "whitelist" or other mechanism for any third party to bypass this filtering."

Because we are a business and had a static IP address, after about 3 weeks of back and forth we managed to get our IP address whitelisted. In the interim we prefaced the subject with FW: which for some reason seemed to get the emails passed Hotmail's spam filter. RE: did the trick until I mentioned it to them in passing while trying to resolve the issue. If you don't have a static IP address you probably won't have much luck with Hotmail.

Also, as an FYI, Hotmail does NOT send NDR's if your mail does not get delivered due to it being considered spam. It just drops the message.

Cheers.

Hmmmm, interesting, thanks for that reply. At least i know it isn't me. My isp is BTinternet, would i be able to get a different ip address if i unplugged the modem from the phone socket and plugged it back again?

I don't know about BT Internet but that doesn't work with Shaw in Canada. They assign blocks of IP addresses to various locations and it usually the entire block that is blocked.

Cheers.
