Not possible - but it worked (???)

I've done a bit more investigation about the problem described in my earlier post (thread481-362708 and I think I've found something that shouldn't work, but it did (before the error that I referenced before). By the way, I'm using BENT 8.5 & Exchange 5.5.

I found some very good documentation on Veritas' site, and I've been working from that. One of the things that the instructions specified was to create a "mail user account" on the Exchange server & verify that you can send & receive mail from this account. Interestingly enough, the Exchange server doesn't have any kind of MTA software set up on it. (Outlook Express is present, but not configured.) The Control Panel doesn't even have a "Mail" or a "Mail and Fax" entry that could be used to set up an account - and yet it all worked just fine until the "backup user" account was deleted.

Does anyone know why this would work when it's not supposed to?

OK, I've gotten it working now. Apparently the new user that I created to run the backup process was FUBAR'd somehow. Creating a new user, changing all of the services & then restarting them has gotten me where I need to be.

Investigated a little further because it bugged me that I didn't know *WHY* the previous user account wouldn't work. I think the answer to that question is below (this is posted in the hope that it helps someone else out):

(Quoted from Veritas' support site, URL at bottom of post)

Backup Exec requires a mailbox associated with the Backup Exec service account. This mailbox cannot be hidden. If the mailbox that Backup Exec is configured to login to is hidden from the address book, the backup job will not be able to attach to the Exchange Server when it runs. Therefore, the mailbox needs to be made available to the Global Address List (GAL).

Oh well, live & learn, right?
