Not going to CDE mode.....
When system is rebooted its not going to CDE mode.No problems with networking configuration for sure system is on network and working fine in single user mode. But not going to GUI based CDE mode....

Also i suspect lvol8 in /vg00/dev/ is missing as it gave some memory error initially. I am a beginner for unix can u tell me the significance of lvol8 and how to recover it.

i am using b2000 visualize HP-UX workstation.
thanks :)

Hi,
lvol8 might differ for each installation of operating system. You should run:
# vgdisplay -v /dev/vg00
to check if lvol8 is configured in your system, then
# grep lvol8 /etc/fstab
to check what is the mount point for lvol8
If lvol8 does not appear in fstab it still might be used by OS (it might be an additional swap space or a filesystem simply not mentioned in fstab).
What do you mean by lvol8 gave some memory error initially? What kind of error?

What is the error when CDE is invoked and fails?

You probably lost a special file for lvol8.
Reboot to single user mode and try to recreate a special file with mknod:
# /sbin/mknod /dev/vg00/lvol8 b 64 0x000008
Then check the output of vgdisplay -v vg00 again to check if lvol8 reappeared.
If so mount /var (fsck might be necessary before mounting /var).

hope this helps,
mewa

sometimes if the Hostname entry is not there in /etc/hosts file, the system doesn't go to CDE mode
