I'm getting an error trying to add a disk to both my datavg and rootvg. I also get this error while creating a new vg with this disk.

myserver:/> extendvg datavg hdisk4
0516-050 extendvg: Not enough descriptor area space left in this volume
group. Either try adding a smaller PV or use another volume group.
0516-792 extendvg: Unable to extend volume group.
myserver:/>

I've done some research and I've found a chvg -t command but that didn't fix it. I've tried to force it as well. Any ideas?

What's the output of "lsvg datavg"?

Have you really run "chvg -t 2 datavg" ?
You still have "MAX PPs per PV: 1016" - after running the command there should be "MAX PPs per PV: 2032"

The disk that violates the 1016 limitation attempts to join a pre-existing volume group with the extendvg command. The user can convert the existing volume group to hold multiples of 1016 paritions per disk using -t option of chvg command. The value of the -t option (factor) with chvg command can be chosen in such a way that the new disk can be accommodated within the new limit of (1016 * factor). However, once the volume group is converted, it cannot be imported into AIX 4.3.0 or lower versions. The user can also recreate the volume group with a larger partition size allowing the new disk to work or create a standalone volume group consisting of a larger physical size for the new disk.

I've run it below again with the same results. I also still cannot create a new vg with this disk. I've never seen this before.

It all depends how big your new disk is.
please post the result of

lasttr -El hdisk4

RMGBELGIUM is right.

Your new disks seems to be bigger 130GB...

If the disk is 145 Gb ( giving you roughly 2265 PP's) , a chvg -t 3 datavg (which will set the MAX PP per LV to 3048)will do the job ,if you haven't got a lot of disks in your VG already, because your MAX PV's will decrease again!

Thanks for all your help. The problem is that I believe that disk is the path control module for the EMC frame. The lsattr -El hdisk4 showed that. The SAN guy said something about like that disk is unusable. I'm used to FastT. (Former IBM guy.)

Thanks for your help.
