Check the Event Viewer on the box to get an idea.
The common fix for olde CE 8.5 was a reboot. Make sure that you have plenty of disk space, there were some issues with CE cleaning up temp files in older versions too.
Checking to see if there are lots of background jobs running too at the same time might help to describe the concern.
And finally make sure that you have the latest service pack:
