Not asking for Passwd from Console ???

I have a sun E450 running solaris 2.6 and it seems to have a funny little quirk that just started.

From remote you can loging in normally IE : Username / Passwd

BUT - from the console it ask for username but NEVER ask for your passwd, just responds back to incorrect passwd or back to the login.

Any ideas ?

console, you mean single-user ?
you are using nis or yp ?
you have no user in /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow. -----------
