i recently acquired a drive from a friend. the problem is that his data was toasted on this drive but the drive is fine. his operating system is corrupted and\or missing folders (i.e. windows configuration figle) when I boot it up. so i hooked it up to my vista system (this drive had win xp pro on it). Vista shows the hard drive as there and installed but I can't seem to assign a drive letter to it. i havent tried updating the drivers for it but i will here by the time i get a reply. my friend really wants his data back if at all possible. any ideas?

1. Check the jumpering (if it is IDE)...
2. use a DATA RECOVERY software to access the drive, e.g. Get Data Back (Forum members endorsed) or equivalent...
