Not a kick fron the recovery disk, problems with gdi.exe

Hi

I have Windows 98 running on an IBM Aptiva E18 computer. When I boot up, I get a message saying that the gdi.exe was is not booting up properly and I should reinstall Windows. Then I get a message saying that it is now safe to switch off windows. When I tried to boot up after this, before I tried to reinstall Windows, I was prompted to run the computer on 'Safe Mode'. I selected this, but I still couldn't get in to boot up properly and it shut itself down.

So, I reluctantly put in the recovery disk and prepared for all my files to be wiped. But the computer is not responding to the recovery disk when it is in the |CD drive, and I don't know what to do about it.

All suggestions welcome

The file you refer to, should be in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.

Are you able to get to SAFE MODE? If so, RUN SFC and scan for corrupted files.

If you can't do that, then try from C:\>SCANREG /RESTORE and choose a date when it was working OK.

Failing that, can you get a copy of GDi.exe from another PC? Copy to a floppy and then from DOS copy it to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.

Are you able to reinstall WINDOWS over the existing OS? Regards

Thanks Phil. My computer was going into safe mode last time I tried it but only for a few minutes before it shut itself down. I couldn't reinstall Windows either.

I'll try the scranreg suggestions this evening and let you know the results
