Hello all,

First I want to say thank you to everyone who posts here because the info that I have found here has been invaluable!

The OS is Windows ME and the product is Norton SystemWorks (NSW) 2002. Somehow I got a error on the Automatic Update line on the AntiVirus screen (maybe because I skipped subscription renewal once the other day??). In any case, Norton says to uninstall Norton AntiVirus (NAV) and reinstall it.

So I started. Uninstalled NSW using Win Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. This was not altogether sucessful because when I went to reinstall NSW it said that NAV was still there. But it didn't show up in the files so I could delete it manually.

Went here & to Symantic website for answers. Read through some of the helpful posts and printed a bunch of stuff from Symantec.

Had my very tech-savy neighbor help me do the manual unistall of NSW as per Symantec instructions (it was my first time with registry edit).

Reinstalled NSW at the Basic version (not sure of the correct term but this is the version with the middle amount of features, not the most features and not the least). Rebooted and got a red box at startup that said NAV configuration files were not accessible.

Hit OK on the red box (no other choice) and finished startup. Got a red x on my Sys Tray icon for NAV and the NAV screen showed errors on AutoProtect and EMail Scanning. When I went to Options screen, I kept getting Internet Explorer script errors. (In the meantime I had downloaded the virus defintions update. I still have dialup because I live in the country so this took longer than cable or dsl - grrr)

Went looking here & Symantec again & then Windows ME Support issues. Upgraded the Internet Explorer browser from v5.5 to v6.0. Still red box error at startup.

Finally decided to uninstall NAV again using the Control Panel Add/Remove Program applet. Uninstall looked cleaner, including deleting of registry entries (which was manually redone earlier).

Tried to reinstall using the Express version of NSW. This is the version with the least amount of features. Rebooted and hurrah the red box NAV configuration file error was gone at startup, AutoProtect was enabled, and the NAV screen showed OK for AutoProtect and EMail scanning.

I hope that this helps at least somebody!
