I have gotten a message, "Cannot read subscription data. Please re-install Norton anti-virus."

First, I tried running System Works, as that contains my AV. It will tell me that there is one error. And gives me a link to "Update Virus Protection". When I submit this link, it tells me my AV already has the latest updates.

I figured I would re-install system works. But it must recognize it is already on my machine. And gives me basically 2 choices. Uninstall and modify. Should I uninstall and re-install? Help greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

It's (almost) always a good idea to uninstall before reinstalling an application that is corrupt.
From the error, you first might want to verify that your subscription hasn't expired.

I have had this exact same problem before hand and it is normally down to one of two things.

1)
If you install more than one symantec product, make sure you install the oldest product first. For example System Works 2002 should be installed before Personal Firewall 2003.
2)

go to the symantec.com homepage and manually download the latest virus definitions hash.
link today is
then run the update program...the one you download. Then do a virus scan...
It's a pain in the butt, but you can manually update your definitions...
good luck hope this helps

Thanks a lot. I don't have anything from symantec other than system works. I uninstalled and re-installed. So far, so good.
