Norton slow to start.

Hi, I'm having trouble with NAV 2003. It takes anything up to five minutes to load up and in doing so makes my machine unavailable for that time. If I set "Auto Protect" NOT to start with Windows then everything is hunkey dorey. I know I can start "Auto protect" manually, but I've been using Norton for the two week trial and that worked great. So I went out and bought the full version and installed it. Since then I have to wait a long time at startup.
I'm hoping that there is a "service" that I should disable or some such easy fix or even a setting that I've over looked.
Any help would be much appreciated.
