Norton Scan Cuts Out

I am using Norton Anti-Virus 2006 which came pre-installed on a laptop with Windows XP. The settings are definitely set to default. When Norton does any form of scan (full system/ quickscan) it slows a great deal between the 800th-900th files, then the scan cuts out completely and the window disappears. According to the 'Status' window the last full scan was completed on the 14th of May, 2007. I don't understand what could be causing this. None of the three people who use this computer have touched the program settings since we've had the computer in our possession.

Any help is appreciated.
