I ran into an issue yesterday where symantec corporate picked up on a virus infecting the "inbox" file of netscape email and quarantined the entire inbox... As you know, netscape messenger recreates mail files if the are deleted or removed. Symantec had done this 8 time over the course of 4 days.
When I tried to restore the file from quarantine to the proper location, it came back saying that the file was deleted. This inbox contained 1.2 gigs of email over 7 years. The client almost cried.
If this should happen to you, check the symantec quarantine for any files about the size of your email database and the date it was deleted. If its there, it shouldn't be a problem restoring it.
Here's what I did...
- First, the dangerous part, disable symantec antivirus...
- Browse to the following: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine
- Copy the VBN file you need to another computer running the same or newer version of symantec, restart the computer.
- Open symantec and under "view -> quarantine", look for the file you need, it should be there. Right click on the file and choose restore, note the file name, mine was a temp file. Again, make sure symantec scanner is turned off or disabled.
- Choose a location for the file and rename the file to something like test. Copy this file into your netscape profile and open messenger and your email should be there...
Keep in mind that if your inbox was quarantined due to a virus, your system will now be infected with said virus. Run a full scan.
Good luck
