Hi there,

I have been doing quite a lot of maintainence on our servers of late, Two servers running NT4, NAV Corporate edition, including trying to free up as much space as possible. One thing I came across on the recycle bin was "empty Norton protected files, of which there are 1903. Should this be emptied, bearing in mind we have just got rid of a few applications that we did not want on the server anymore, or left well alone?

I spose I am asking what is it?

Sounds like you also have Norton System Works on there as well. That's why you would get the protected recycle bin. If you are sure that nothing is needed or can't be replaced, go ahead and empty the protected bin.

The protected files are just files marked by Norton as "probably" important. Until you actually empty the protected bin. I've never needed to go back to it. And in most cases the bin max'ed out at 1500 files anyway.

And then, honestly, I would get rid of NSW on a server, and leave only Norton Corporate on there.

The short version, it provides an undelete avenue.

If you are running a server, and have backup, you don't need it. Waste of time/resources/space.

I agree with J.R. you should get it off the server unless someone has access to the system that might accidentally mess it up.

If you are worried you might need something that was sent to the recycle bin after all of your maintenance, leave it be for a few days until you are sure....then clear it out.

Thanks, that is both most helpfull, Kimbertech gets the star for pointing out that someone might have access to the server that does not know what they are doing. With us here, this is the case, the boss, unfortunately.

Thank you so much for the feedback.

Always feels so good to know when I help.

Have a great day!
