I have a desktop that is running Win98. It has 128 Mg of Ram, is a PII 450 and plenty of hard drive space. The problem is I am loading Norton Internet Security on it. Everything seems to load from the CD, but after it is done teh yellow monitor in the start tray on the lower righthas a red "X" through it and the Internet Security symbol(the globe) is not working either. I try to open them but I get the hour glass for a few seconds then nothing. Same thing happens under Start, Windows. I have reinstalled it 3 times with the same results.

You did use 'RIGHT CLICK' plus 'Enable' on the red 'x'?

The 'x' normally means it is in disabled mode.

I reloaded the CD and this time NOrton Antivirus loaded. Norton Internet (Globe) still had a red x. I did right click and enabled Norton Internet Security. The red x went away and immediately the red x came back over the Norton Anti-virus. When I right click it only gives me the choice to "Open Norton Anti-Virus". When I click on that it just gives me the hour glass for a few seconds and goes away and will not open. I cannot open it from Start Programs either.

Also during installation, it does not ask for the key for the License Agreement. I think there is something wrong with the cd

Go to add remove programs and click on Norton Internet security
You can do a repair from it at this point
Hope that helps you a bit
Make sure you set a password!

I am running Win98. There is only Add/Remove. Norton then pops up asking if I want to Remove/Modify(add or remove individual items) or reset password. I pressed reset password, set a password, but it did nothing. I can right back in and change the password again. Everytime I load the application, as soon as I click on the anti-virus icon the red X appears over it. Again, it never asks for the license key on setup

I put in a password, then went to modify and it did not work. I took the cd and just started to run it in a system with win XP home and one of the very first screens asked me to enter the license. SO the cd is ok, but it will not load correctly on Win 98 2nd edition

Have you tried cleaning out your temp and internet caches?

*.TMP
%TEMP% (in explorer address bar)
CONTENT.IE5

Do you run standard anti-spyware/malware tools?

Have you tried loading with all your startup items disabled in MSCONFIG?

VOP, I tried everything you suggested, and still came up with the same results. On this computer the license key will page does not come up, it loads and when it is done it will not open.

have you checked throughly for trojans etc? If you go to Trend Micro and download their sysclean utility and a pattern file, it finds lots that get through standard anti-virus programs. should get you there. :)

I have the same problem with Norton Internet Security Professional 2004. It's running on a Windows Xp Home Edition OS. It doesn't ask for registration/activation, then it refuses to start. If you right-click the globe in the taskbar (with the red x) and enable it, a few seconds later it wel vanish. Clicking the shortcut doen'st work. Strange thig is that Norton Internet Security 2003 DOES work. What is this all about?

Update: I checked the desktop shortcut ("C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\NMain.exe" /nosysworks /dat:C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security Professional\NISPLUG.NSI) and found out that the file 'NISPLUG.NIS' isn't in that map. Does anyone else have this problen. Is there a site where I can find this file?

Update 2 (sorry for frequent posting): I have the answer to your problem (This worked for me, I don't know if it works for the regular Internet Security too).
First, uninstall EVERY Symantex program you've got. After you are CLEAN of those programs, do the following:
1. Delete leftover files. These are found in these locations:
A. C:\Program Files\Symantec (this could already be removed)
A. C:\Program Files\Common Files. Delet the Symantex Shared map.
C. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data. (If Application Data isn't visible, enable 'view hidden files in Map options). Delete the Symantec map COMPLETELY.
D. Each account that the programs have been used on also have files (check all of them). See C:\Documents and Settings\(enter user-name here)\Application Data. Delete the Symamtec map.
E. ****These are register deletes. It is advisable to make a backup before you do this****
Open the Regedit (type Regedit in the Execute window(or whatever that is in English, I have a Dutch version). (Or go to Task Manager, New Task, and typ Regedit).
Now go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE. Delete the Symantec map.
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE and delete the Symantec map here.

I would do a reboot at this point. After that, install Internet Security. This time, the registration window will appear.

Howdy,

A while back when I dumped Norton AV for AVG, I had trouble getting rid of Norton. I found a utility on their website that deletes everything the "Add/Remove Programs" uninstall misses...

This was several months back, but I would think the utility can still be found on their site...

No! Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try. - Yoda

I had a Windows XP home that Norton Internet Security 2004 would not install on. It had been 1/2 instaled by custurmer. Symantec has a uninstal tool and directions on there web site that should work.
