Norton Internet Security and Windows 7 screensaver

When my screen saver launches, in less than a minute a popup shows up in the lower right corner saying that Norton is working in the background. This popup kills the screen saver.
I don't need to be reminded that Norton is working, that is what I pay for. I just want the screen saver to stay on whenever my computer is idle.
I went into a chat with a Symantec tech, and this person said that I should set the protection to off on the setup menu, for up to six hours. This in not a solution. I want the protection, and the screen saver.
