I can not get Norton DiskDoctor to run on XP. It's always giving me an error to the effect of some other process has control of the drive. Any experience with this??
Having looked at an intimidating list of complaints about Disk Doctor on the Web, I would suggest you try other options to check your disk integrity.
The first place I would go is the Web site for the drive manufacturer. Download their diagnostic program. Likely it will want to create a floppy disk drive image. Let it.
While on the manufacturer's Web site print out any documentation available for the program. This is important.
Usually the diagnostic program will offer several options. One of those options will destroy anything on your hard disk drive. You do not want that option. (Hence the printout above). All of the diagnostic routines I have seen make it nearly impossible to ask for a destructive test without confirmation, so the utilities are reasonably safe.
The utilities offer several tests:
. You connection, whether the jumpers and cables and BIOS settings are correct, with advice;
. A logical testing of the drive: whether the structure of your boot, directory, FATs, etc. are okay, and a quick test of drive function.
. A "re-certification" non-destructive, that takes some time, but does a thorough examination of the drive.
. And the low-level format, destructive type of testing.
Combine that with the native XP chkdsk and defrag features should be sufficient to assure you that your drive is working okay.
