Norton/ArcServe Conflict

Hi All,

Here is my problem:
ArcServe takes 3 hours to backup 18GB of data = Normal

ArcServe with Norton AV CE running (But no realtime enabled) takes about 8 hours to backup 18GB of Data = barely tollerable

ArcAerve with Norton running with realtime enable = backup hangs.

I have tested this for about the past 3 days in various configs and the results are always the same. The log only show a large gap of time between the last entry and the usual finishing stuff: Packing sparse file vol1://etc...

The file in question is 14,944 KB in size.

I'm not sure that it's "hanging" on this file, it's just that it's the last entry before the big time gap shows up.

Any thoughts???

I actually struggled with this problems through a couple of companies with the backup agent sometimes crashing hangin etc. I finally narrowed it down to Norton. I've since changed preferred AV software to Trend but you make look into whether norton is using standard MAPI or AVAPI scanning. If its using AVAPI it will interupt the backup process. The solution unfortunately for norton is either to reinstall the program and only select MAPI or disable the service before you run the backup (you may try this just to test to make sure its the problem) anyway hope this helps..

This is a known issue with Norton and other AV.
Use a pre and post job to Stop the AV service before the backup, and restart it after the backup.
Make sure you're not running with the job option checked for "scan for virus", this activates BUILT-IN Arcserve virus scanner.
