Has anyone else had issues with email scanning slowing down mail clients connecting to servers? (takes 30-45 seconds instead of instantly). I have two customers who are having the same issue and the only connection between them is Norton Antivirus. If there is a known issue, is there a fix?

I have had a similar problem, except that it's not just slowing down, emails aren't sending at all. If I turn off email scanning, it works fine. The problem seems to be caused by a symantec common client update - I've done a system restore to the day before the update, and again, it works fine.

Same problem here as peteekp. Also found that it seems to be the latest common client update that is causing it. Had to restore to a previous point for it to work. Did find that if I disable 'incoming e-mail scanning' that it would work also.

Have restored back for now and will see if Symantec comes up with a solution. Have e-mailed their tech support with this problem and am now waiting for a reply.

My Eudora 6.1.0,6 began to time out in a flakey manner, making it difficult to pop my various email accounts after I did a Norton live update yesterday (December 7). I find the 2004 quite frustrating as I've had Live Update problems this year.

How do I unintstall yesterday's live update? It was to the "common client" as mentioned in above threads"

Thanks
Lynn

My problem is only with sending emails, not picking up pop email, so I wonder if you may have a different problem. If you have windows xp, then go start >> programs >> accessories >> system tools >> system restore, then choose "restore my computer to a previous time" and on the next page simply pick a date which is highlighted before you applied the update. You'll then be asked if you're sure and it will reboot and do it's business.

If you've got windows ME, then I think it's the same... although if you've got ME, I've seen plenty of problems with that and NAV this year, so you are better off either using a different AV package or burning your computer and buying a new one with XP.

I'm also waiting on a reply from Symantec tech support - they are currently telling me to try all the things I've already tried....

Apparently Symantec have removed the update causing the problems - just had this reply;

Hello Pete,

Thank you for contacting Symantec Online Technical Support.

I understand from your message that you still face the same issue even after following the steps.

Pete, as this issue appeared after installing the latest program updates, this error can be caused by a problem with the Symantec shared components Common Client 2.0 program update. The update that caused this problem has been removed. To resolve this issue, please follow the steps mentioned in the document specified below:

Title: 'Error: "Your email message to <email address of recipient> with the subject <email subject> was unable to be sent . . ." (1003,9)' Document ID: 2002071214223706 > Web URL:
Please do not hesitate to contact us further if you have any concerns or queries.

Kiran,

I would like to remove the common client update as I'm sure that is why my Eudora has sporadic time-outs popping. (It began right after that update). It's not clear to me how to remove a specific update.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Lynn

lynnonline: depending on what o/s you have, eg. xp or me, then you can do a system restore to a date before you installed the update (which has now been removed from the update site) If you have any other o/s that does not have a system restore function, then you will probably have to uninstall nav and then reinstall it to get rid of the update.

Follow the link in the post above yours from peteekp to the symantec support site that explains what to do.

mmk6052,

Thanks again for your help. To clarify what worked for me, I went to the above link and clicked on the first bullet which starts "If you have a...". This then took me to another article which had an explicit download of a replacement dll for the one causing email problems. BTW, my problem was in SENDING email so I never got the errors discussed in the Symantec articles.

If someone from Symantec reads this, I suggest you broaden the description of the symptoms from the faulty shared email proxy file, and put the solution in a more prominent place.

Lynn
