Hi,

I'm trying to install Norton A/V 2005 on a Windows 98 laptop. It installs fine but when the system reboots, Norton won't start. The AutoProtext icon has an X over it and double clicking the Norton program icon does nothing. LiveUpdate starts up but the laptop has no NIC to get on the net.

I've checked Symantec's site and they say it may be a virus. I think that might be the case too but I don't want to reformat. Is it possible to run a complete virus scan without installing Norton?

If you can get online, the easiest way is to run one of the online virus scans to find out if you have a virus. Norton has one, but you have to dig for it in the support area. It may be easier to find one on sites from Trend Micro and others.

If you have another win98/Me machine with Norton on it, you can create a rescue "disk set" in a directory and burn it to a CD-R. You can then copy the contents to a folder on the C drive, boot to a command prompt (from the F8 boot menu) and run a dos level scan (navdx).

This scan can either repair or delete infected files - it can't quarantine them. I usually try the repair option first. Use navdx /? to see what the options are and make sure you create a log file so that you have a list of the infected files and the results.

Trying to load Norton A/V 2005 but will not install.
Pop Cd into drive install menu appears select install Norton A/V 2005 then windows disappears and then floppy drive activates for a few seconds and then nothing.

What is up with this?
