Since I "upgraded" to Norton AV 2003, I have had a number of problems and been very frustrated by the lack of help available at Norton. I've joined this forum hoping some of you can help me with issues as they arise and save me from having to uninstall the whole system in frustration.

I actually am a computer professional, but main frame and midrange, not PC. However, I dabble with my PC and will probably be needing more help in the near future when I link my two systems (WIN 2K on one and WIN 95 on the other). I have the router. I will be buying a new firewall system.

Here are my current problems, all not quite solved, but no longer show stopping.

1. I couldn't get my e-mail after the last complete scan. I'd get a POP3 error stating my system couldn't connect to the mail server. After spending many hours talking to a patient Verizon tech, I remembered that I had recently upgraded Norton. The Verizon tech wished me luck and happily signed off on the problem.

Of course, there is no way to contact Norton or get any help from them. Following their on-line help just led me to a list of e-mail worms and viruses, not help with Norton's interferring with my system.

I finally turned off e-mail scan and auto protect out of frustration. After rebooting I was then able to get my e-mail. Then I turned on the scanning and auto protect and found that the e-mail now worked with it on.

After posting on PC Mag's board and the extreme forum at Delphiforums I got some answers about what was going on. I need a place to get more information. I hope this is it. Specifically, is Norton going to fix this problem or do I have to work around it every time Norton gags on a big e-mail?

The second problem is that ever since I installed Norton 2003,IE quite often forgets to prompt me for a disconnect when I shut down all IE screens. I have IE set up to prompt me for disconnect when a connection is no longer needed. I want that prompt. I don't want to leave my computer connected indefinitely. I rely on that prompt. Do any of you know what happens to the prompt?

The third problem is solved but not by any help from Norton. I found Word was impossible to open after the upgrade. It would take ages and I'd see a message that system was requesting anti-virus. Even a very small document would take several seconds to open and I'm used to things opening instantly on my P4 with 512 memory. What on earth is Norton doing to the document for all that time? I solved this by taking a WAG when I saw the option to "Enable Office Plug-ins." Hey, I said to myself, maybe Norton thinks Word is an office plug-in and what they are really talking about is enabling protection of office plug-ins. Whatever, turning that off, let the documents open normally. Is there any way to have Norton scan office plug ins when they come in from an external source (the web or my other computer)but leave them alone if they exist on my hard drive.

All Antivirus programs have side effects, sometimes they're not as noticeable on some systems. Norton 2003 scans all file types and e-mails by defaults. If you copy a file from another computer, or saving it to your hard drive, it does get scanned. As to it affecting your e-mail performance, you can turn it off, just make sure you disable the preview window in your mail client, and save attachments to the hard drive, before you open them.
