I was wondering if anyone out there has any insight onto the future of Nortel products. I have heard Avaya has picked up some of the Nortel line of equipment/ software but how long will that be supported? Unfortunately, we have the data folks at my workplace salivating at the fact that Nortel is going / gone under and Cisco will be the platform for the future. We have started migrating to Cisco at some sites but have not replaced any nortel switches yet. I was just curious to other peoples opinion out there.
Happy Holiday's!

I heard that Avaya will supprt the Nortel line for 3-5 years and it will be phased out. There will be no new software releases. Now, I think to be smart about it, Avaya might want to integrate a little Nortel into their product simply because there is so much Nortel out there! As far as Cisco, it may look good up front with pricing, but just wait until you have to upgrade........ Forget the wallet, get a loan!

according to avaya eng and former nortel eng.. new rls's are in the works as well continued production for the next 10 years.. avaya did not pay that much money to shut down the comptition.. if that would have been there objective, the fcc would not have allowed the sale.. the gov contracts alone for new switches will run another 10 years, they had to detail plans to fufill that contract prior to approval. they do plan on a heavy rework of tm software, but have not attempted to block cli access for the foreseeable future.

the only good thing about avaya software is you can be a trained engineer in under two weeks.

i have two sons that work for nortel, they seem to think this platform will last another 20 years.. 19 years longer then i plan to work

I know that they are installing CS1K's in all the SSA sites across the country, and will continue to install CS1K's to fulfill the 10 year contract Nortel Government Solutions had with the SSA.

Nortel has a huge commitment to the Federal Govt for the next 10 years. They are not going anyplace soon. The product is still superior to anything out there, and the support is still 99.999% It's people like us that have always been on top of our game to make our customers look good. If you are new to Nortel, please get "certified"! We are here to help you, but we work to make money. Call your local Nortel vendor and ask questions. You should find a good one soon.

Jan 19th I believe AVAYA comes out with their plan for Nortel product line.BCM's look to be a keeper.

Not sure where that leaves us in another 5 yrs or less when all a customer will need is a cd/software to install into a single server for a PBX/Voicemail system.

I need another 20yrs :p

vztech - how are your MS Exchange skills - better start your MSCE training. I really don't want to see MS rule the world, but they do have world domination as part of their future plans.

what a lot of people seem to ignore when that say the sky is falling is that one thing avaya wanted was the massive customer base that nortel had. that along with people like us that keep that cust base happy and spending money.

but if you have a spare 15 minutes you can be an avaya "ingineer"..

i recently had an avaya senior tech tell me he wanted dictation phones did so that the doctors could call out.

The Roadmap for integrating the Nortel and Avaya product lines will be webcasted on January 19 at 1:00 pm EST.

Go to this page ( and click on the "Video Webinar: The New Roadmap" link to register.

This will probably be the most important announcement of the year for Nortel users, with regard to strategic planning for telecom.

Xirtam- I think your correct- knowing exchange will be a huge help.
