Have a slightly odd issue which hopefully someone can help on or at least point in the right direction.

Basically we have an issue with external calls where outbound voice drops during the call so the external party keeps missing 5 seconds of the call and get dead air it will then cut back in eventualy!

However this only seems to happen when the i2004 handsets are on speaker phone if you pick the handset and are using the handset for the entire call the problem does not occur.

Any thoughts?

Many Thanks

Steve

Is there a high level of ambient noise in the background?
I have seen when a phone is left on speaker for a "long time" and there is high ambient noise (like in a computer room) the noise canceling gets confused and kills the audio.

Never heard of that particular issue on a normal call though. I spend most of my day on the speaker phone and have never seen that behavior.

What you could do is run a Wireshark trace on the IP set, and watch the RTP audio stream to see of the network is reacting oddly. The IP media stream is peer to peer between the DSP resource and the phone. Watch the packets between those 2 endpoints and you will narrow down your issue.

Also, as usual, make sure patches and firmware are current!

This is an issue on many types of phones and systems, not just IP, when full duplex phones are not being used at both ends. From the sound of your write up, the issue was very likely at the "other end" of the call. They were the ones causing the ambient noise by shuffling papers etc in front of the mic causing it to transmit, effectively blocking their receive on their simplex set. If you have the opportunity, experiment with the other end picking up the handset to see if the problem goes away.
