In need of your expertise.

We are getting a new SL-1 switch and a new CallPilot at a government location. The Embark/Nortel technicians are requesting for an IP address and access to the government DCMA network to connect the Call Pilot Administrator functionality.

Is this necessary for logging in from a 24-hour Call Center?

Connecting through a modem an option and better?

The government does not want to provide the technicians access to the government network. Any suggestions?

Thank you.

It would make sense to me to have both. Hopefully you are on a secure network where outside vendors would have no access. Network Connection to this would give you a fast and easy internal access to the system for admin. The modem would give the vendor access without compromising your security and would also give you access externally if you ever needed to do that late light emergancy password change.

Hope this opinion helps.

santanacomm....look at your maintenance agreement being
the government you have things most customer dont with
embarq thats why they ask for network access if you ever
have to dial into callpilot to fix something trust me
you would prefer network access over modem.

I wouldn't want to give outside access to anyone on your Network!! It should be on your internal network for your own admin purposes, but the safer secure method is to have them use modem dialup, and you control when the modem is turned on and off. They should not need to get in there unless there is an issue, or for upgrades, but under any circumstance you should be notified first, and controlling when the modem is turned on is a good way to maintain control.

again if they have a contract thats states for the vendor
to keep antvirus software updated its HAS TO BE BY NETWORK
CONNECTION PER NORTEL ITS NOT A PERMANENT CONNECTION THE
ONLY WAY TO USE THIS CONNECTION SOMEBODY HAS TO BE ONSITE
AND CHECK THE LITTLE BOX YES WHEN TECH SUPPORT WEBS INTO
THE SERVER WHEN THEY ARE DONE YOU DISCONNECT THE CONNECTION
but if thats not the case then so be it now with that said
when your system is down in the dirt they need a network connection and they dont have one right then and there
they tell get a network connection a call them back now you
go back in queue so do the math.

There are 2 connections to the CallPilot server, the ELAN and CLAN. You have no choice as to the ELAN connection. This has to be there for the server to communicate with the PBX. This can be done with a standalone switch. The CLAN is used for administration by the customer and desktop messaging applications. If you do not have this then you do not need the CLAN connection.

Yes it would be great to have the connection incase Nortel support ever needs to do a webex connection and they will gripe and moan about it but they can do everything through the modem or tech on site.

As far as the tech on site needing access, if you have a segregated ELAN then he can set his laptop up for a vacant elan address and get into the server that way.

Most everything can be done on the callpilot server except application builder.

tnphoneman...yes in most cases but the way they want
anti-virus done it has to be network connection as we
speak we are beta site for nortel on anti-virus installations with callpilot.
