Hello, I have a very strange issue I hope someone can help with. I have a network in which I installed a Nortel BES1020 switch. The issue that I am experiencing is that when I connect a new device to the switch, I get a link, but the device is unavailable to the network. I do not get an IP address, if I have a static address assigned to the device it is not accessible or pingable. If I reboot the switch with the new device connected and powered on, it will then work. So what I have found is that in order for all devices to work on the network, I have to have all devices connected and powered on. If I add a new device, I have to reboot the switch. I have pulled the switch off of this network and installed at our office and the switch works fine. I have replaced the switch with the same type of Nortel switch and I have the exact same issue. Before we installed this switch we had an Avaya switch and did not have any issues. I replaced because we needed more ports and had this switch in inventory. The router/firewall that we are using at this site is a SimpleWan. I contacted SimpleWan support and they said their router should not be causing this issue, which I don't see how it would either. But the only difference between this site and my office is the router. The other thing is the switch becomes un-pingable when I connect to this network. Any help is appreciated. I am at a lost here...

Sounds like a config issue with the uplink port to the router.

Have you got vlans configured on the switch
Which vlan is configured as the mgmt vlan
Are the vlans tagged on the uplink and what is the native vlan (PVID) of the uplink
What vlans are configured on the SimpleWan

Also look at spanning-tree configuration, are the router and switch running the same mode
Is bpdu-filter enabled

No Vlans have been setup. Actually nothing has been configured on the switch other than an IP address. I am assuming by default it is VLAN 1. I will take a look at the simpleWan settings. Thanks for the reply.
