How do you access the Console from your PC to the Nortel Comm Port? Do you use Hyperterm? What are the settings? What do you use for Hardware? i.e. Cross over cable/Rollverover Cable/Straight Cable using both ends as DB9 Port Adatpers. I can't get in the Console of the Nortel but I can easily in the CISCO. Please help me out here, thanks.

Hello,
Nortel has their own RJ-45/serial adapters that they charge an arm and a leg for. You can buy them, 1 for the PC serial and 1 for the 450,60,70. These will also work for 1200, and 8600's.

Or you can get the pin out of the internet. I came across it somewhere once and wish I have saved it :( ... and have someone make them for you.

I have gotten a serial to serial cable to work in a couple cases...

I do use HyperTerminal and the settings are like Cisco's... 9600 N,8,1

Hope this helps!
Jason

Wow man, thanks, but the arm and leg thing is not an issue my company is willing to pay for it. I know plenty on the CISCO Stuff just that I never worked with Nortel, and I am required to figure it out. If you find a link, or topics on how to wire it which I can do, but need the wiring diagram.

Thanks Jason!!!!:)

To make a typical Cisco serial cable into a typical Nortel serial cable, just get a 9 pin to 9 pin null modem adaptor.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

ok your saying that if I use a Typical RollOver Cable from a CISCO to a Nortel Cable to use a NULL Modem 9pin to 9pin? I saw online that it goes from a 9pin female to Male adapter, which we dont' want, we want a female on both ends right? What about the RJ45 Jack end? Convert that with any type of 9pin or another Null Modem? I want to clarify this. Thanks for your best effort on this. Let me know when ya get a chance.

or would this one work?

That's a link that will use a typical both ends as female, then I can access the Nortel switch using the same configuration as a Typical Console settings with Hyperterminal with a Nortel switch. let me know man, thanks a lot.

Use a straight through serial cable, (2,3,5 connected to each other on both ends), 9 pin, female on both ends. Null modem cables are used for the Contivity, Accelar and some Passport devices, but for some reason the edge switches remained straight through. Radio Shack has them for under $10. 9600-8-N-1, flow control off. Press Control-Y, and you should see the login menu.

If you don't know the password, there isn't anyway to recover the password (that I'm aware of, someone please correct me if theres a better way) except to stack the unit with another 450/BPS/460, etc with a known password, then do a factory reset on the stack. The unit you are stacking it with should have the same software rev as the system you are trying to recover the password from. You might be able factory reset the switch through Device Manager using SNMP, provided you know the SNMP strings and IP address. IP address might be hard to get without a serial cable, but it is doable with sniffer utilites.

You can reset the password on the 400 series switchs... I forget the key stroke, but...

Get on the console port and power it off and back on.
While rebooting hit keystroke. I want to say it was like ctrl-z or ctrl-y while booting.
This will bring up a menu and from here you can reset the switch to default.

I use a USB to Serial Cable . You can switch between Null and Straight via software :)

I use two typical Cisco 9-pin adapter for connect to BayStack.
I connect it's adapters by typical Ethernet patch.

hyperterminal, standard settings of 9600, 8, n, 1. 9-pin straight through serial cable.

yeah i tried that, doesn't work. I used a working switch too. I am going to get a NULL MODEM CABLE to see if that solves the problem. I have tried, cross over, rollover, straight throughs with 9pins adapter, etc........just to check out options, last one is to try the Null Modem connector.

yeah the serial comm port, maybe, that's a good possiblity. I just don't know, got the Network Tech's breathing down my throat when they know i am a cisco tech not nortel tech. I am willing to expand my knowledge. I don't know what's the deal is. I wil try the Null Modem. I have tried all week long for this, still nothing. Again, NULL MODEM Cable see how that works. Thanks for your help man!!! :)
