We have a new baystack 380 fiber switch, I need to program, for a combination of 3com cisco nortel switches. I could use some pointers to make sure I have the differnet switchs programmed accordingly.
any tips would be appreicated

Hi wcd,

What kind of switch programming would u like to accomplish?
Describe the design and connectivity and your goal(s) if you would.
Thanks, HH

We are interested in configuring multiple ports on this Fiber switch to be configured with 10 different VLan's.

I can get one of the main Fiber ports to be recognized on our network. I have assigned the fiber switch an IP address and can access the Fiber switch via Device Manager.

I have not had any success having the Fiber switch view other switches from its ports. The scheme is to have our main switch (which has 10 different VLan's) view other fiber switches, that would be able to again pass these different VLan's to other ethernet switches in our networking infrastgructure.

I can get the Main fiber port that is connected to the Main Nortel Chassis, to see the network. I can get Device manager to view the New Nortel Fiber Switch. But I cannot get any ethernet switches to be recognized from the new Nortel fiber switch.

I have added all of the Vlan's but I must have not configured them correctly on those fiber ports.

Hi Wd,

In order to get VLANs communicating between switches, you will need to configure VLAN tagging (802.1q) often called VLAN "trunking". You will need to configure this on both sides.
From device manager be sure to enable the fiber port as a "trunk" port, and then add that port to the 10 VLANs that you'd like on the 380-24F (or whatever subset of the 10 thats relevant for that connection).

On the remote side, you will also need to configure the 802.1q VLAN tagggin/trunking protocol with same VLAN IDs on whatever switch you are using. If the switch does not support 802.1q then, unfortunately, this will not work.

I hope this info is helpful.
