Hi!
I have a problem.
Our 8608SX card (8 GigabitEthernet) suddently stopped working, I tried to change it with a new one but I still have the same problem. The card initialization ends with an error and there's no way to let it work (I've also changed slot) (and rebooted the device).
My conclusion is that the cards are both working and that the problem is somewhere in the Passport 8610 switch.
In the below log you can better understand the situation:

[11/09/07 03:07:39] Card inserted: Slot=7 Type=8608SX
[11/09/07 03:07:40] Initializing card in slot #7 ...
[11/09/07 03:07:40] ERROR Task=tChassis bfmTest:Failed Register Test Octapid 32 on slot 7
[11/09/07 03:07:40] 2k card up(CardNum=7 AdminStatus=1 OperStatus=2)
[11/09/07 03:09:56] Card inserted: Slot=8 Type=8608SX
[11/09/07 03:09:57] Initializing card in slot #8 ...
[11/09/07 03:09:57] ERROR Task=tChassis RARU Record Memory Address failure: 56400004
[11/09/07 03:09:57] ERROR Task=tChassis bfmTest: Record Memory Test ARU 1 slot 8
[11/09/07 03:09:57] 2k card up(CardNum=8 AdminStatus=1 OperStatus=2)

Is it a backplane problem? Does the switch need to be changed?

Thx for helping me :) !!

Normex.

Have you tried moving from the bottom half of the chassis to a slot in the top half? I think the two haves use diffeent buses - maybe a problem in the bottom bus since I see you tried slots 7 and 8. Are other cards working in the bottom slots?

Have to tried to swap to your backup processor (if you have one), or pull the inactive processor?

I think we had problems years ago with a 10 slot chassis once that had cards that wouldn't come up in the bottom half but top was OK. I believe we swapped out the chassis.

Hi curtismo,
yes, I've also tried to put it in slot 3, it's the slot where the original card was before it stopped working.

The bottom slots are empty, the 8600 Passport has only one supervisor and 2 48 ports card (if we exclude the 8 Gigabit card).

So do you think that the whole internal-bus has problems?

I want to be shure of what I'm going to say to my boss before suggesting him to change the whole router!!

Thank you!

The 8600 has two backplanes - the left side is controlled by the CPU/fabric in slot 5 and the right side is controlled by slot 6. Since you only have one CPU/fabric you are only using one of the backplanes, but you could try moving the CPU/fabric to the other slot (5 vs 6).

If that gives the same error you may have to replace the CPU/fabric module, although its odd that you don't have problems with all of the modules in that case.

Probably would try moving the processor to the second slot, but the next would be swapping the chassis. I wish I could remember the issue we had on our one 10-slot unit.

I had to change out a chassis once when I pulled out a bad fan tray and the rear connector from the backplane came out with it!

It looks like a problem with the backplane
[11/09/07 03:07:40] ERROR Task=tChassis bfmTest:Failed Register Test Octapid 32 on slot 7
BFM refers to backplane fabric module
